Miami International Airport, Downtown Miami and PortMiami Car Rental
Car Rental in Port of Miami is a rather simple process but at first glance it is confusing for cruise passengers driving to/from PortMiami and Port Everglades.
In this section we explain the different rental locations and how to avoid car rental mistakes when cruising from PortMiami or Port Everglades.
For Port Everglades Car Rental information, please visit our Port Everglades Information Page.
We always remind PortMiami cruise passengers to think twice about renting a car before or even after a cruise.
While there are many sensible reasons for having a rental car at your disposal, folks often regret the decision because:
- overnight parking is expensive at most hotels
- driving in Miami is a challenge due to heavy traffic
- vehicles cannot be dropped or rented at the cruise terminals
- waiting for rental car shuttles can get frustrating
The airport is only 30 minutes drive from the cruise terminals (faster when traffic is light) and affordable transportation is readily available.
Finally, if you choose your hotel carefully you will be amazed by the efficiency (and low cost if not free) of the public transportation in Downtown Miami and nearby areas such as Brickell. A vehicle is not needed!
Car Rental in Port of Miami Locations
There are two locations of note for cruise passengers – The Rental Car Center at Miami Airport and the Miami Downtown area near PortMiami.
Note – there are no rental car facilities at the PortMiami Cruise Terminals.
If you are planning to drop the car at either location, always make sure you use the CORRECT DESTINATION in order to use the FREE shuttle service to your cruise terminal.
Look for destinations such as “Dollar – Miami Cruise Ship” or “Miami – Port of Miami” or “Port of Miami – Shuttle for Cruise Ships”. Be very careful with this!
Then – check the address of the destination! Hertz, Avis and Budget run shuttles from their downtown locations ONLY!
Upon arrival by air at Miami International Airport, cruise passengers should follow the signs to the Rental Car Center (described below).
The drop-off decision is not always easy – should you drop the vehicle downtown near the cruise terminals and hotels or back at the Rental Car Center? Please read on for our recommendations.
Miami International Airport Rental Car Center
After baggage claim, look for overhead signs to the MIA Mover – this is an elevated “monorail kind of train” that will take you to the Rental Car Center.
Take the elevator to Level 3.
The MIA Mover is great fun but it is just a short ride to the Rental Car Center!
At the stop, follow the signs to the Rental Car Agencies. This is Level 4 of the Rental Car Center and you will enter a large hall with rental car counters to the left and right!
Please Note – If your Rental Car Agency is not listed on the sign boards it probably has an off-site location so proceed straight to the exit doors ahead for the shuttle van.
If your dropped your vehicle at the airport and need to proceed to PortMiami, follow the sign to the pickup area for Cruise Port Shuttles. This is also where you can find taxis and wait for your ride share driver.

Which Airport Rental Car Agencies offer Free Shuttles to/from PortMiami?
Hertz, Budget and Avis have Downtown locations with shuttles to PortMiami. DO NOT drop your vehicle at the airport when using these companies when planning to shuttle to the Cruise Terminals.
Miami Downtown Rental Car Locations
Do not be intimidated when considering a Downtown vehicle drop or pickup! The streets are actually very easy to navigate; just take note of the one-way options and plan ahead!
Avis, Budget and Hertz are on the same one-way street! As shown on the map below, make sure you turn onto SE 2nd St near the Bayside Area. It is a one-way going west!
TIP – If you set your GPS to the Downtown Courtyard by Marriott you will arrive very close to these 3 agencies!
You will find Hertz, then Avis then Budget on the right side of the street so stay to the right as you drive west along SE 2nd St.
NOTE – Alamo, Enterprise and Sixt DO NOT offer shuttles to/from the cruise terminals from their downtown locations.
You enter the parking garage next door and drive up to the 5th floor to drop your vehicle.

Enterprise is in a office block connected to the Hyatt Hotel. Just keep right as you enter the lobby and keep walking! You drop the car in front near the Valet.
Questions and Answers
Are Port of Miami Car Rental offices at the cruise terminals?
No, unfortunately not! You need to take the free shuttle vans between the cruise terminals and rental offices.
Is Miami Cruise Port Car Rental recommended?
We really do not recommend renting a car when cruising UNLESS you plan to explore areas outside of Miami. Miami has a vast network of low-cost or free public transport options. Uber/Lyft and taxis are widely available
What is my best option for car rental near port of Miami?
If you MUST rent a car then we prefer the airport location. The downtown offices do get busy on some cruise days. If you do not mind waiting then either option is good!
